The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
